Wade Phillips named Texans’ interim head coach

Longtime defensive coordinator and former Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips will take over the Texans on an interim basis after Gary Kubiak was fired Friday.

Wade Phillips will take over as head coach of the Houston Texans after Gary Kubiak was fired by the organization Friday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Texans owner Bob McNair said that a search for a new head coach is already underway, with interviews to be held "on a confidential basis" while teams finish out their seasons.

Phillips has served as the Texans' defensive coordinator for the last three seasons. He has extensive head coaching experience in the NFL. Most recently, he served as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 2007-10. Before his stint in Dallas, he was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 1998-2000, and the head coach of the Denver Broncos from 1993-94. He has been named an interim head coach twice, in 2003 with the Atlanta Falcons and in 1985 with the New Orleans Saints.

For his career, Phillips owns an 82-61 regular season record as a head coach. He is just 1-5 in the postseason, however. After notching his first playoff win with the Cowboys in 2009, he was fired in the midst of the 2010 season due to a 1-7 start.

The Texans are 2-11 on the season following a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. With the loss, the Texans solidified their current grasp on the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.
