Terence Newman injury: Bengals CB will miss 1-3 weeks with MCL sprain

A knee injury will temporarily sideline Newman but shouldn’t keep him out of the postseason.

Initial fears over the severity of Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Terence Newman's knee injury were apparently overblown, as it appears he will return in time for the postseason and perhaps even before. ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Newman has a sprained MCL that will keep him sidelined between one and three weeks.

Newman left during the fourth quarter of the Bengals’ Week 14 win over Colts. He was seen on crutches after the game and head coach Marvin Lewis acknowledged the knee was “a little sore.”

With Leon Hall on injured reserve, the Bengals will likely turn to second-year man Dre Kirkpatrick to slide from his nickel spot to the No. 2 spot Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Adam Jones, who's been starting alongside Newman since the injury to Hall, will man the other starting position.

Newman, an 11-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowl selection, has started all 13 games this season for Cincinnati, picking off a pair of passes and knocking down 14.
