Jerry Jones wants Tony Romo to retire a Cowboy

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants Tony Romo to retire with the Cowboys.

USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are going forward with Tony Romo as their quarterback, though his deal expires after the 2013 season. But if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gets what he wants, then Romo won't be going anywhere soon.

Or ever, as it happens - at least until he’s ready to call it a career. According to the Star-Telegram, Jones wants to get Romo signed to a contract extension prior to him hitting the open market next season, and he wants Romo to retire with the Cowboys when it’s all said and done.

That being said, it doesn’t look like Jones expects Romo to retire any time soon. Jones said that the “most positive result,” would be to extend Romo, then eventually re-sign him, then extend him again, which would lead to Romo’s retirement.

He didn’t go into specifics on the years of any of these deals, but it’s pretty clear Jones wants Romo to stay. He did say that the two sides aren’t sitting down for formal contract negotiations at this time.

How long Romo has left in his career is actually an interesting question. He’s 32 years old and has spent 10 years in the NFL, but he didn’t play for the first three. So he’s really only played seven seasons. Unfortunately for him, he’s had some significant injuries over those seasons.

Still, it looks like he’ll be remaining with the Cowboys for at least the next couple seasons with how confident Jones is in extending Romo prior to hitting free agency after this season.
