Redskins re-sign Chris Baker to 1-year contract, according to report

The Washington Redskins placed the right-of-first-refusal tender on Chris Baker, which is worth $1.3 million.

The Washington Redskins have re-signed defensive tackle Chris Baker. Baker will sign a one-year first-right-of-refusal tender worth $1.3 million, according to 106.7 FM The Fan's Grant Paulsen.

If Baker receives another offer, the Redskins will have a week to match it, because of the tender. The Redskins will not receive compensation if Baker receives another offer, and the team elects to let Baker go.

Washington Examiner beat writer John Keim notes that Baker has played defensive end in addition to his natural position of defensive tackle, and offers versatility for the Redskins -- and believes Baker provides the Redskins an insurance policy for Adam Carriker, who tore his quadriceps in September.

Baker, a Connecticut native, went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft. Baker was signed by the Denver Broncos as a free agent, and made his NFL debut with the Broncos in 2009. Baker only appeared in one game for Denver before being released in 2010. Baker signed with the Miami Dolphins and appeared in one game for Miami before being released in 2011.

The Redskins then signed Baker to the practice squad. Baker did not appear in a game for Washington in 2011, but appeared in 14 games in 2012, recording 15 tackles. Baker's addition to the 53-man roster in 2012 was partially thanks to an injury to Chris Neild. Neild tore his ACL in training camp last August, and missed the entire season, thrusting Baker into the backup defensive tackle role.
