Jets sign David Garrard

The New York Jets signed former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard on Monday, bringing in competition for incumbent starter Mark Sanchez.

The New York Jets brought in competition for Mark Sanchez on Monday, signing free agent quarterback David Garrard. Terms of the deal are currently unknown.

Garrard last appeared in an NFL game in 2010, when he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Garrard signed with the Miami Dolphins last year, but was cut at the conclusion of training camp after Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore passed him on the depth chart. Garrard underwent knee surgery in August and, despite declaring himself healthy in the fall, he did not sign with another team in 2011.

Now in New York, Garrard will be given a chance to win the Jets' starting quarterback job. Sanchez struggled mightily in 2012, and was eventually benched in favor of Greg McElroy.

After a full season away from the NFL, New York offered the best chance for Garrard to win a starting job. Still, it’s likely that Rex Ryan will give Sanchez every opportunity to win the starting job this summer, despite his inconsistent play.

Garrard has been a solid but not spectacular quarterback throughout his career. In nine years with the Jaguars, Garrard completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 16,003 yards and 89 touchdowns against 54 interceptions -- good for a quarterback rating of 85.8.

The Jets now have four quarterbacks on their roster -- Sanchez, Garrard, McElroy and Tim Tebow. It's believed that the Jets will trade or cut Tebow.
