Anquan Boldin calls 49ers trade ‘shocking at first’

Anquan Boldin called his trade to the San Francisco 49ers “shocking at first,” as he thought that he’d wrap up his career in Baltimore.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers traded a sixth-round pick for Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin on Monday. As it turns out, Boldin didn't hear about the trade immediately or even know one was in the works, at least according to him. Mike Sando of ESPN posted some quotes from Boldin in which he talked about the trade.

Boldin said that being informed of the trade was “an initial shock because I had no clue that I was going to be traded.” He then followed that up by saying that the trade is a “good thing,” and complimented the 49ers’ organization. Boldin said that it’s “a good, good place for me to be.”

Given that Boldin also said that he found out about the trade from family and friends via text message when he arrived in Senegal, a country in West Africa. It's easy to see how he would be shocked. He thanked the Baltimore fans and talked about feeling accomplished due to Baltimore winning a Super Bowl in 2012, but called the trade bittersweet because he "always thought that Baltimore would be my last stop."

That isn’t to say that Boldin is done playing or anything along those lines, it’s just that he’s been vocal about wanting to remain with the Ravens. He’s enjoyed his time with the team and, again, it won the Super Bowl last season. It’s easy to see why he wouldn’t want to change a good thing.

Of course, he'll be ready to play for the 49ers, the team that lost the Super Bowl this past season. Boldin will likely be the No. 2 receiver behind Michael Crabtree, and figures to be a big part of the offense with developing quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
