The Houston Texans released long-time No. 2 wide receiver Kevin Walter on Tuesday according to Adam Schefter. The move will save the Texans $2.5 million in cap space for the 2013 season. Walter has been with the Texans since 2006 and served as one of their regular starting wide receivers since 2007.

Last season Walter caught 41 passes for 518 yards and two touchdowns while starting 14 of 16 games, finishing third on the team in receptions and yards behind Andre Johnson and tight end Owen Daniels. Walter ranks third all-time in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns for the Texans.
With Walter gone, Houston will be looking for a new wide receiver to line up opposite from Johnson. At 31, Johnson is coming off one of the best seasons of his career and Houston would like to add youth and speed to pair alongside him.
Walter is still a solid receiver and strong blocker who will find a new home in free agency, but likely not as a starting receiver. He had two years left on his contract before he was released.
