Redskins rumors: Aqib Talib is Washington’s top cornerback target

The Redskins are in the market for a cornerback and reportedly have their sights set on Aqib Talib, but fitting Talib under the salary cap could prove to be a serious challenge.

Aqib Talib is one of the top cornerbacks on the free agent market and is also one of the top targets of the Washington Redskins, according to a report from Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan.

The report cites a pair of free agent defensive backs who said Talib is the cornerback Washington covets. While Washington may be interested in Talib, there is some question as to how they would fit him into their salary cap. The Redskins are currently $600,000 under the salary cap, leaving very little room to pursue Talib or any other free agent, according to Mike Jones of the Washington Post,

The 27-year-old Talib could be in line for a contract worth at least $5 million per season and possibly significantly more. The Redskins could restructure the contracts of a few high-priced veterans to make room, although, they are yet to approach a number of veterans, according to Jones.

Talib began last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, starting four games while also serving a four-game suspension. He was traded to the New England Patriots and started five regular season games for the Pats. Talib does have ties to Washington, as current Redskins general manager Bruce Allen drafted Talib in Tampa Bay, while defensive assistant Raheem Morris coached Talib for four seasons.
