NFL free agency: Detroit Lions sign Jason Jones

The Detroit Lions added some versatility to their defensive line on Wednesday, signing defensive tackle Jason Jones. Jones has the ability to play both defensive end and defensive tackle.

The Detroit Lions continued to be active in free agency on Wednesday, agreeing to a deal with defensive lineman Jason Jones, according to Tim Twentyman of the Detroit Lions.

Jones and the Lions agreed to a three-year deal, per the report. While he is coming off a season-ending injury, Jones should add depth to the Lions' defensive line, as he has the ability to play defensive tackle and defensive end. He signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks last offseason after spending his first four seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

Pride of Detroit: Jones has ties to Schwartz

Jones was limited by a knee injury last season, but when he was healthy, he made an impact for the Seahawks. He finished the season with three sacks and four pass deflections while playing in 12 games. Jones’ versatility made him a target for several teams, with the Lions long-rumored to be interested in the 26-year-old.

Jones should be a natural fit in Detroit, as he has ties to both head coach Jim Schwartz and defensive assistant Jim Washburn. Jones could be a candidate to start at defensive end next season with the expected departures of current starters Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril.
