NFL free agency: Titans to sign Shonn Greene
Former New York Jets running back Shonn Greene will reportedly sign with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.
Greene will serve as a change-of-pace back for the Titans, as Chris Johnson is the team’s clear starter at tailback. Greene’s bruising style of running will complement Johnson’s quick and electric style of rushing.
As New York’s primary running back, Greene rushed for over 1,000 yards each of the last two seasons. In 2011, Greene carried the ball 253 times for 1,054 yards, averaging 4.2 yards-per-carry, and in 2012, Greene garnered 276 carries for 1,063 yards, averaging just 3.9 yards-per-carry.
Greene rushed for 14 touchdowns over the last two seasons.
Undoubtedly, Greene’s workload will shrink significantly in Tennessee, which could lead to an increase in Greene’s yards-per-carry average.
The Jets drafted Greene in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft, with the No. 65 overall pick out of Iowa.
Green Bay, Atlanta and Denver all reportedly had varying degrees of interest in Greene, but it’s the Titans that will land the free agent running back.
