NFL free agency rumors: Steelers, 49ers interested in Lorenzo Alexander

Lorenzo Alexander is drawing interest from the Steelers, 49ers and Cardinals, and he could be on his way out of Washington, according to a report.

The Washington Redskins could lose a key special teams member through free agency this week, as Lorenzo Alexander is drawing interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, according to The Washington Examiner.

Washington simply doesn’t have much money to spend, as the Redskins are currently less than $1 million under the salary cap. With needs in the secondary, it seems unlikely that Washington will be able to invest enough money in Alexander to keep him from signing elsewhere.

Alexander went undrafted in the 2005 NFL Draft, and he originally signed with the Carolina Panthers as a member of the practice squad. Alexander also spent time in 2006 on the Ravens' practice squad, but never appeared in an NFL game for the Ravens or Panthers.

The Redskins signed Alexander to their practice squad in 2006, and Alexander made his NFL debut for the team in 2007. Since then, Alexander has been a fixture on special teams, and he was named Washington’s 2011 Special Teams Player of the Year and also named to the NFC’s 2012 Pro Bowl roster.

Alexander also served as Washington’s backup linebacker, and recorded 2.5 sacks in 2012.
