NFL news roundup: Ed Reed to visit Texans, Wes Welker signs with Broncos

The new league year has officially begun and those that were starved for real NFL action now have enough to feast on for a very long time.

For those who have been starving for NFL action, now that the league year has begun, there’s enough news to feast on for many moons. Wednesday has been exciting as it’s the first full day of free agency signings for the 2013 season. Here’s what you may have missed.

The Denver Broncos have made the biggest free agency signing news so far on Wednesday, landing free-agent receiver Wes Welker, who became a household name after the last six seasons with the New England Patriots where he excelled with Tom Brady. Welker will now catch passes from Peyton Manning and should add a whole new level of problems for defenses facing the Broncos.

Speaking of Welker, Brady is reportedly enraged that the Patriots let one of his favorite targets over the last few years escape. Who can blame him?

After losing Glover Quin to the Lions, the Texans are bringing in free agent, and future Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed to Houston for a visit that will take place on Thursday. Reed would be the best replacement for Quin. He is also expected to visit the 49ers and the Colts.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent safety Dashon Goldson to a five-year deal, stealing him away from the 49ers, who were hoping he'd stick around for the 2013 season and beyond. The particulars of Goldson's contract aren't yet known, but he reportedly wanted a deal that would pay him something in the vicinity of $8 million per year.

The Detroit Lions found their running back when they signed free agent Reggie Bush to a four-year contract. Bush proved his worth over the last two seasons in Miami when he showed the league that he has the ability to carry the ball between the tackles as an every-down back in the NFL.

After sitting out in 2012, Vince Young and the Oakland Raiders have had "preliminary talks" about the free-agent quarterback visiting the team for a workout. Young has been disappointing since his debut with the Titans and has struggled to make the transition from college to professional quarterback. Carson Palmer is the man, for now, in Oakland.

The Arizona Cardinals found their new running back by signing free-agent Rashard Mendenhall, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers, to a one-year deal. Mendenhall found a fair measure of success in Pittsburgh, but struggled in 2012.

The 49ers signed free-agent defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey on Wednesday. The former first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs isn't a superstar, but he should provide some depth to the Niners' defensive line and should improve the team's front seven.

Shonn Greene was signed by the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, likely in hopes that he can be a complement to the speedy Chris Johnson. Greene is a between-the-tackles type back and his addition may remind fans of the days when Johnson and LenDale White teamed up in the Titans' backfield.

The Titans made the news again on Wednesday by waiving both safety Jordan Babineaux and guard Mitch Petrus, making them both unrestricted free agents. Titans guard Steve Hutchinson also called it quits, retiring on Wednesday.

It was also announced on Wednesday that former Ravens linebacker, and future Hall of Famer, Ray Lewis will be joining ESPN as an NFL analyst for the 2013 season.
