NFL free agency rumors: Browns, Redskins interested in Fred Davis

The Cleveland Browns are interested in signing tight end Fred Davis, while the Redskins would like him to return to Washington.

The Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins would both like to sign free agent tight end Fred Davis, according to Adam Schefter.

Davis is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon he suffered in Week 7, but is expected to be fully healthy by the start of the 2013 season. He has spent his entire five-year career with the Redskins, with Washington using the franchise tag on the tight end last offseason.

Prior to injuring his Achilles, Davis caught 24 passes for 325 yards and was one of the focal points of the Redskins' offense. In 2011, he caught 59 passes for 796 yards and three touchdowns before a four-game suspension ended his season. Due to his injury and 2011 drug-related suspension, Davis may not command the same salary other free agent tight ends like Martellus Bennett and Jared Cook have earned with new contracts.

New Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski likes to use the tight end and is looking to upgrade from Ben Watson. Cleveland can afford to offer Davis more money than the cash-strapped Redskins, but Washington is hoping Davis will take a hometown discount.
