Christian Ponder injury: Vikings QB throwing 2 months after hurting triceps

Minnesota has hopes of returning to the playoffs and will need a healthy Ponder to do so.

Adam M. Bettcher

Christian Ponder is throwing a football for the first time since he injured his right triceps in January, according to 1500ESPN.com.

Last season, Ponder suffered a cruel twist of fate after leading the Minnesota Vikings to a 10-6 record and the first playoff berth of his career. In the last regular season game, Ponder was hit on the elbow by Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett, effectively knocking him out of the NFC Wild Card game against the Packers the following Saturday.

Now, Ponder is back throwing and believes he will be ready for OTAs that roll around in the spring, according to ESPN.

“I probably had to tear through some scar tissue and stuff. But it feels fine now, throwing last week and everything felt great. So, it’ll be ready to go for OTAs.”

The Vikings need Ponder to step up this season with the team already jettisoning wide receiver/returner Percy Harvin and cornerback Antoine Winfield.

Last year, Ponder threw for 2,935 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while starting all 16 regular season games.

April 22 is the beginning of Minnesota’s offseason program, three days before the NFL Draft.
