Keith Rivers re-signing with Giants, according to report

Linebacker Keith Rivers will return to the Giants for a second season in New York.

The New York Giants re-signed linebacker Keith Rivers to a one-year contract on Thursday, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger.

Rivers was traded to the Giants last offseaon from the Cincinnati Bengals for a fifth-round draft pick. In his one season as a Giant, Rivers recorded 44 tackles in 11 games, six of them as a starter. Rivers has always had durability issues, and last season, he missed time with hamstring and calf injuries. Over his four-year career, he has missed 18 games and never played a full 16-game season.

During his rookie season in 2008, Rivers got off to a good start through seven games before Hines Ward shattered his jaw. That injury was what led to the institution of the "Hines Ward Rule," making it illegal to blindside block to the head or neck of the defender with a helmet, forearm or shoulder.

The Giants are thin at linebacker, so Rivers should help add some depth, but it is unlikely he will find himself as a starter going forward.
