NFL news roundup: Steven Jackson to Atlanta, Matt Cassel to the Vikings and more

While the third day of free agency wasn’t nearly as busy as days one or two, there’s still plenty of news to catch up on.

The first two days of free agency for the 2013 season were completely crazy as news filtered in about new rumors or signings every 20 minutes. Day three was quite a bit slower, but that doesn’t mean nothing happened.

Here’s what you may have missed.

Free-agent running back Steven Jackson has found a new home in Atlanta and he'll be carrying the ball for the Falcons in 2013. Jackson has been one of the best running backs in the league over the last decade and should add a whole new dimension of nasty to the Falcons already potent offense.

The Minnesota Vikings have added a new quarterback to the team by reportedly signing former Chiefs gunslinger Matt Cassel. The Vikings already have their quarterback in 2011 first-round pick Christian Ponder, so Cassel will likely serve as a backup in case Ponder is injured or if he begins to struggle on the field.

According to reports, the Saints have signed free-agent cornerback Keenan Lewis in hopes that he'll help boost their No. 31-ranked pass defense from the 2012 season. When facing quarterbacks like Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and Josh Freeman twice each year, they need all the help they can get.

The Colts signed a new defensive tackle by bringing in former 49er Ricky Jean-Francois. Jean-Francois should help boost the Colts front seven and will likely be used as a defensive end in the Colts' base 3-4 defense.

The Giants decided to re-sign free-agent linebacker Keith Rivers on Thursday. Rivers was traded to the Giants before the 2012 season and played 11 games, making 44 tackles. The Giants have been purging more players than they have been signing due to their salary cap situation.

The Chiefs decided to sign free-agent defensive back Sean Smith to a three-year deal on Thursday, according to reports. Smith spent the last few years in Miami with the Dolphins and is known as a big and physical cornerback with the ability to cover top-tier receivers.

Unhappy with his play, the rumor is that the Cardinals are planning to release quarterback Kevin Kolb, allowing him to hit free agency. Since he’s owed a $2 million roster bonus on March 17, his release would likely come sooner rather than later if it does happen.

There are also several rumors of players who are still unrestricted free agents visiting teams around the league. Some include Greg Jennings reportedly is scheduled to visit the the Vikings, Donald Jones is reportedly going to visit the Patriots, Terence Newman is reportedly visiting the Raiders, Nnamdi Asomugha is reportedly set to visit the 49ers this week and both the Redskins are reportedly interested in re-signing free-agent tight end Fred Davis, so long as they can get there before the Browns.
