NFL Free Agency: Louis Delmas signs with Lions

The Detroit Lions are banking on Louis Delmas being able to stay healthy by inking him to a two-year deal.

The Detroit Lions signed safety Louis Delmas to a two-year contract on Friday, the team confirmed.

Delmas spent his first four years with the Lions, where he was bothered by injuries for much of his career. When healthy he is among the top safeties in the league and was the most talented member of the Lions secondary. Over the past two seasons Delmas missed 13 games, but he is only 25, so if he can stay healthy he has a long and bright future with Detroit.

Last season in eight games, Delmas made 38 tackles, two interceptions, and defended two passes. With the Lions defense struggling over the past seasons it was thought they may want to keep Delmas, but concerns over his health stalled talks between the two sides. As recently as the Scouting Combine, Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew said team doctors were still evaluating Delmas. For his part in the negotiations, Delmas said, “the Lions are cheating on me.”

The evaluation of this contract will come down to the health of Delmas. If he rebounds from a couple injury-plagued years, it could be a great deal. But if he goes the way of Bob Sanders, it will be nothing but frustration for the Lions.
