Patriots sign Aqib Talib, according to report

New England looks to bolster their secondary with a low-risk deal with Talib, a player with a load of talent but an extensive history of legal and substance abuse issues.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the Patriots and cornerback Aqib Talib have agreed on a one-year contract.

Talib was suspended for four games during the 2012 season after testing positive for Adderall during training camp. He played four games with the Buccaneers in 2012 before being traded to New England in November.

He played in the Patriots' final six games of the regular season and both of their playoff games. He had 10 tackles in the Patriots' 42-28 win over Houston, and was playing well before pulling a hamstring in the first half in the AFC Championship game against Baltimore.

The Patriots secondary fell apart after that, as the Ravens overpowered New England down the stretch en route to the win and an eventual Super Bowl championship.

Considered to be an outstanding cover corner, Talib has found himself in trouble a few times in his NFL career. He’s previously been arrested for aggravated assault and battery charges in separate incidents (he wasn’t convicted), and punched Buccaneers teammate Cory Byrd at the rookie symposium in 2008 after Tampa Bay selected him with the 20th-overall pick.
