Brandon Lloyd released by Patriots

The New England Patriots released Brandon Lloyd on Saturday afternoon, and consequently avoid paying Lloyd a $3 million roster bonus.

Brandon Lloyd's time in New England appears to be over. The Patriots will release Lloyd on Saturday, and consequently, avoid paying him a $3 million roster bonus, according to The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe.

New England signed Lloyd in 2012, believing he would help provide a vertical threat, and add an element to New England's offense that its lacked since Randy Moss was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 2010. Lloyd finished the season with 74 receptions (on 130 targets), for 911 yards and four touchdowns.

Though his numbers were solid, Lloyd never materialized into the receiver many believed he would with Tom Brady as his quarterback -- especially since Lloyd had played for Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels previously in his career.

Still, Lloyd could end up back in New England. The Patriots and Lloyd were working on restructuring Lloyd’s contract, so that New England would not have to pay the $3 million roster bonus. Now that Lloyd is an unrestricted free agent, the Patriots will have to compete with other teams for his services -- if they choose to attempt to re-sign him.
