Brian Cushing injury update: Gary Kubiak expects Texans LB back for training camp

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing should be ready for the team’s preseason training camp, according to head coach Gary Kubiak.

Ed Mulholland-US PRESSWIRE

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak expects linebacker Brian Cushing to be ready for training camp, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Kubiak said there's "no doubt," that Cushing will be ready, unless the team decides to bring him along slowly so as not to aggravate his injury.

Another Tweet from Rapoport confirms that Cushing will not take part in any of the team’s offseason program. That’s to be expected, given the season-ending ACL tear he suffered just five weeks into the 2012-13 season. Cushing missed 11 games, not counting the team’s run at the playoffs.

The injury came after New York Jets offensive lineman Matt Slauson put a low block on Cushing that has caused some debate over the usage of low blocks. Cushing himself has stated that it was a dirty block and hopes that the league will eventually make some changes to the way the rules define these blocks.

As it is, that might be something that happens soon. The league is set to vote this week on possibly changing the rule, which seems popular among coaches around the league. If this is a change that’s made, it’s a shame that Cushing had to lose most of his season to get it done.

But Cushing being ready for the preseason is definitely a good sign for the Texans, who are hoping to be right back in the playoffs next season.
