The San Diego Chargers are hoping defensive end Vaughn Martin stays for his fifth season with the team, according to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora on Friday. But they may have to ward off other suitors, including the Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints, to retain him.
NFL free agency rumors 2013: Chargers want to bring back Vaughn Martin, according to report
San Diego wants Martin to stay but it sounds like they’ll have some competition for his services.
Martin is coming off a 2012 season in which he recorded one sack, one forced fumble and 19 combined tackles in 12 games played. His most productive campaign came in 2011 when he compiled 47 combined tackles and a sack in 16 games.
Drafted by San Diego in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of the University of Western Ontario, Martin lined up as the Chargers' starting right defensive end in 2012. His season was cut short, however, after he suffered a groin injury during warm-ups for the team's Week 14 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Martin did not return in the regular season for the Chargers.
