James Anderson signs with Bears

The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with free-agent linebacker James Anderson on Sunday.

The Chicago Bears announced Sunday that Chicago has agreed to terms with free-agent linebacker James Anderson, formerly of the Carolina Panthers.

Anderson spent his first seven seasons with the Panthers prior to his release in March. Anderson served as Carolina’s strong-side linebacker in recent years, but only appeared in 12 games for Carolina in 2012, and recorded 73 tackles while failing to record a sack or create a turnover.

Carolina signed Anderson to a five-year, $22 million deal after the NFL lockout was lifted in 2011, but the Panthers opted to cut ties with the linebacker just two years into the contract. Anderson was due to earn just $2.9 million in 2013 with the Panthers, but still, Carolina opted to cut ties.

Anderson now joins a revamped linebacker corps in Chicago. Last week, the Bears announced they would not re-sign franchise icon Brian Urlacher, and signed former Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams.

Though he’s not a star, Anderson is just two years removed from his career-year in 2010, when he recorded 130 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumbles recovered to go along with an interception.
