Dallas Cowboys rumors: Michael Huff will visit Monday

Despite having no cap space to operate with, the Dallas Cowboys will host three free agents on Monday, including Michael Huff.

Free-agent safety Michael Huff is one of three players who will visit the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, but the visits aren't an indication that the Cowboys will sign any of the three, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

In addition to Huff, the Cowboys are hosting safety Will Allen and linebacker Jason Durant on Monday.

The Cowboys, however, do not have enough money to offer any of the three free agents a contract, and are simply doing due diligence for if and when the Cowboys have money to spend.

Dallas has been one of the quietest teams in free agency this offseason. Jerry Jones' team placed the franchise tag on Anthony Spencer, and restructured a handful of veteran contracts including DeMarcus Ware, Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Ryan Cook and Brandon Carr, but have not been active players in free agency.

The biggest change this offseason for the Cowboys has been on the coaching staff, as Monte Kiffin replaced Rob Ryan as Dallas’ defensive coordinator. Kiffin will implement a Tampa-2 offense, which is a drastic change from Ryan’s 3-4 offense that the Cowboys have run in recent years -- and built the defense around.

Under Kiffin's Tampa-2, the Cowboys need strong play out of the safety position, which explains why both Huff and Allen are visiting, despite a lack of cap space. Currently, Barry Church and Matt Johnson project as Dallas' starting safety duo, and neither Church nor Johnson has much experience in the NFL.

Huff was released by the Raiders on March 12, and has yet to find a new home. Oakland used Huff at cornerback last season because of injuries, but planned to use Huff at safety in 2013 -- his natural position.

Oakland selected Huff with the No. 7 overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas. Huff would provide the Cowboys with much needed experience at safety as the team transitions to a Tampa-2 defense, but unfortunately for the Cowboys, they are unable to offer a contract until either Tony Romo or Anthony Spencer agrees to a contract extension.
