Raiders rumors: Carson Palmer could be cut

Carson Palmer is reportedly unwilling to restructure his contract, and the Raiders could decide to cut Palmer and save over $5 million in cap space as a result.

The Carson Palmer era in Oakland could be coming to an end soon, as it's "highly unlikely" that the former USC quarterback will restructure his contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. If Palmer is unwilling to restructure his deal, it's possible the Raiders will cut Palmer.

Palmer is due to earn a $13 million base salary in 2013, and carries a cap hit worth over $15 million. If the Raiders cut Palmer, they'll be on the hook for $9 million of dead money -- but can save $5 million in cap space for the 2013 season.

Since being acquired by Oakland, Palmer has been an average quarterback. In 25 games with the Raiders, Palmer has completed 60.9-percent of his passes for 6,771 yards, averaging 76 yards-per-attempt, while throwing 35 touchdowns against 30 interceptions.

The Raiders are just 8-16 when Palmer starts at quarterback.

Oakland traded its 2012 first-round draft choice, and its 2013 second-round draft choice in exchange for Palmer. Cincinnati selected cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick with Oakland's 2012 first-round pick.

Terrelle Pryor and Matt Leinart are the only other quarterbacks on Oakland's roster, so if the Raiders do cut Palmer, they'll likely seek another veteran quarterback.
