Russell Wilson brings Seahawks together for offseason workouts

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is organizing a throwing session with his receivers before the team’s official offseason program in April.

USA TODAY Sports

The NFL's collective bargaining agreement mandates that official offseason programs cannot begin until April 15. That is to say, teams cannot organize the players into workouts of any kind until that point, nor can they require the players to attend any official team function. But that doesn't mean the players can't organize their own workouts, and that's just what Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is doing.

According to the team’s official website, Wilson is organizing a passing session with his receivers in Southern California in April before the team’s actual offseason workouts begin at Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

Wilson, now well-known for his enthusiasm for preparation before, during and after the season, said that the workout is to “get our minds ready and our bodies ready for a great season.” If last season is anything to go by, then 2012 could certainly be a great season.

Under Wilson, the Seahawks were a much better team than anybody expected. Few thought he’d be the immediate answer at the quarterback position, but he came in and led the Seahawks to an 11-5 record, and tied the single-season rookie record for touchdowns with 26. He led the team into the playoffs, and even secured a road playoff victory as well.

This isn't a huge football camp or anything like that. Wilson won't be putting the team through the same paces they'll go through when the offseason program starts, but for the Seahawks, it's got to be a good sign to see Wilson's continued enthusiasm for improvement and for the team in general. That said, some extra time throwing to new target Percy Harvin can't hurt, either.
