Oakland Raiders sign OL Alex Barron

The Raiders signed offensive tackle Alex Barron on Tuesday; Barron has not played in an NFL game since 2010.

The Oakland Raiders signed free agent offensive tackle Alex Barron on Tuesday according to Pro Football Talk. Barron has not been on an active NFL roster since 2010, last playing with the Dallas Cowboys.

Barron, 30, was a first round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2005 out of Florida State. He started five seasons in St. Louis before signing with the Dallas Cowboys in 2010. Barron started the 2010 season at left tackle, but committed three holding penalties in the season opener, including one that called back a game-winning score. Following that game he lost his starting job and was cut at the end of the season. Barron also struggled with penalties while with the Rams, often being among the most penalized linemen in the league.

In 2011 he started training camp with the Saints, but was placed on injured reserve and released. Last season he spent camp with the Seahawks, but failed to make the regular season roster. The Raiders hope Barron can help an offensive line that ranked third-worst in run blocking in 2012, according to Pro Football Focus. He is the first offensive free agent signing of the year for Oakland.
