Jason Campbell signs with Browns, according to report

The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent quarterback Jason Campbell, according to a report. It’s possible that Campbell will be given an opportunity to compete for a starting role.

USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent quarterback Jason Campbell, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. No details as to the length or dollar amount were stated in the report. The numbers will likely be telling, as they should indicate whether or not the Browns are paying Campbell like a backup or a potential starter.

Second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden is the starter incumbent, but the new regime doesn't seem to be confident in his abilities. In fact, many have felt that drafting Weeden, then 28 years old, in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft was a mistake that just reeked of desperation.

In a relatively weak quarterback class, Campbell was probably the best guy still on the market. He's played some solid football with the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders throughout his career, but more recently he was a backup to Jay Cutler with the Chicago Bears.

Unfortunately, Campbell didn’t play very well in relief for Cutler. When Campbell was forced to step in, he completed 62.7 percent of his passes with two touchdowns, two interceptions and a couple of fumbles. Statistically, it wasn’t that bad, but there was never the feeling that he was going to make something happen when he was on the field.

Of course, this could partly be due to the fact that the Bears had one of the worst offensive lines in football.

It was rumored that the Bears wanted to bring Campbell back to continue his role behind Cutler, so the Browns either offered him more money or he still feels like he can be a starter and felt going up against Weeden would be an easier task than the impossibility of usurping Cutler.
