Carolina Panthers re-sign Dwan Edwards to 1-year contract

The Carolina Panthers re-signed defensive tackle Dwan Edwards to a one-year deal on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers re-signed defensive tackle Dwan Edwards to a one-year deal on Wednesday, according to the team's digital media coordinator, David Monroe.

Edwards was a second-round pick out of Oregon State in 2004 by the Baltimore Ravens. He spent his first five seasons with the Ravens before signing as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills, where he spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons. He then signed, again as an unrestricted free agent with the Carolina Panthers for the 2012 season.

In his career, Edwards has made 280 tackles and 11.5 sacks. His best year was in 2012 with the Panthers when Edwards racked up six of his 11.5 sacks. He said that he’s happy to be back with the Panthers.

“I’m definitely glad to be coming back to the Panthers and hope to take the next step by getting to the playoffs,” Edwards said. “I had my best year last year and I want to build on that and improve on that.”

Edwards is a strong pass rusher from the interior defensive line and can pressure the opposing quarterback from the middle while defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy come off the edge.

He is also entering his 10th season in the NFL and is hoping to not only contribute heavily on the field in hopes of moving the Panthers closer to the playoffs, but he is hoping to step into a leadership role as well.

“I feel like I can step into a leadership role now that I know guys and they know what I’m all about,” Edwards said. “Hopefully, I can help some of our younger guys on the defensive line become better players.”

The Panthers finished the 2012 season with the No. 10 ranked defense. They were No. 19 against the run and 20th against the run but they gave up only 333.1 yards per game. The defense also finished with 39 sacks, which was good for ninth place in the league throughout the regular season.
