NFL free agency 2013: Lions to host kicker David Akers

As they mull over bringing Jason Hanson back for a 22nd season, the Lions will visit with free agent kicker David Akers.

The Lions will meet with free agent kicker David Akers next week according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free-Press. Akers could serve as a possible replacement for Jason Hanson, who the Lions have yet to sign to a new contract.

The San Francisco 49ers released Akers earlier in March after a poor 2012 season in which he made just 29 of 42 field goals, but the 38-year-old kicker dealt with a hip injury for much of the season. Akers showed he still has a big boot in Week 1 last year, when he made a record-tying 63-yard field goal. Prior to 2012, Akers had made three consecutive Pro Bowls and has six Pro Bowl selections during his career. The 49ers signed Phil Dawson to replace Akers.

Detroit would like to bring the 42-year-old unrestricted free agent Jason Hanson back, but the two sides have yet to come close on the terms of a contract. Hanson has been with the Lions for his entire career and made 32 of 36 field goals in 2012.
