NFL free agent news roundup: Tony Romo extension, Kevin Kolb rumors and more

At the end of a slow week, Tony Romo and the Cowboys finished Friday with a bang by extending him and making him the highest payed player in franchise history.

Just when we thought it was going to be a slow day to cap off a slow week of free agency, the Dallas Cowboys dropped a bomb on the NFL by extending quarterback Tony Romo to a franchise record breaking contract. Of course, other stuff happened too.

Here’s what you may have missed on Friday.

Romo and the Cowboys came to an agreement on a six-year extension on Friday which will pay the quarterback $108 million, $55 million of which is guaranteed. While Romo's extension isn't quite as huge as Joe Flacco's record-breaking contract, he will be guaranteed more money. Both contracts may look small compared to Aaron Rodgers' contract extension, which is expected to be coming soon.

According to reports, the Bills, who cut quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick earlier, are interested in free agent quarterback Kevin Kolb, who was released from the Cardinals. Kolb was traded to the Cardinals by the Eagles in 2011 but has struggled both on the field and with injuries that have kept him sidelined. The Bills have struggled at the quarterback position and if they can find someone to step in, they could be much more competitive in the AFC East.

The Giants have scheduled a workout with quarterback Pat White, according to sources. While there's no question that the Giants have their quarterback in two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, they may be exploring the possibilities of running a read-option style offense at times due to White's athleticism. The team also needs a replacement backup quarterback as well.

The Washington Redskins and tight end Fred Davis came to terms on a one-year deal, according to sources. Davis was Robert Griffin III's top receiving target through the first six games of the 2012 season, but suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 7 against the Giants. Davis had reportedly narrowed his choices down between the Redskins and Bills.

Free agent pass rusher Dwight Freeney has narrowed his wish list down to the Dolphins, Broncos and Lions, according to reports. Freeney wasn't re-signed by the Colts, where he had spent his entire career, and would make sense at any of these locations. In Denver he would replace Elvis Dumervil, in Detroit he could help replace Cliff Avril and he could help the Dolphins, who struggled at pressuring the passer in 2012.

The Raiders, who are in a stalemate with quarterback Carson Palmer, are reportedly working towards a trade with the Seahawks that would send Matt Flynn to Oakland. Should that be the case, Palmer would be released and the Raiders would have traded for another quarterback to hopefully move their team closer to the playoffs.
