Dolphins sign Brent Grimes, according to report

Miami continues spending this offseason and Grimes, who was placed on injured reserve after tearing his Achilles early in the 2012 season, has a year to show he’s healthy.

It's clear the Miami Dolphins intended to make a splash in free agency this offseason.

They didn’t make a splash as much as they nearly emptied the pool with a Gilbert Brown-sized cannonball.

Multiple sources are reporting Saturday the Dolphins have come to terms with free agent cornerback Brent Grimes on a one-year contract worth $5.5 million.

Grimes, who is considered a high-end cornerback with a significant injury history, would be an outstanding replacement for Sean Smith, who signed with Kansas City this offseason.

He's been linked with the Dolphins since early in the free agency period, but was linked with Cleveland and Tampa Bay, as well. Miami has signed wide receiver Mike Wallace, linebackers Phillip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe and tight end Dustin Keller so far.

Adding Grimes to the mix makes an outstanding haul in Miami even better, provided Grimes has successfully rehabbed from a torn Achilles tendon suffered early in 2012. He started 44 games over five seasons with the Falcons and had 11 interceptions from 2009-11. He was given the Falcons' franchise tag last year and was looking to cash in big time this offseason.

His one-year deal shows the impact the injury had on an otherwise outstanding career to date.
