Darrelle Revis trade rumors: Rex Ryan insists says ‘no truth’ to reports

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan says there’s no truth to reports on the team shopping cornerback Darrelle Revis.

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets have a lot of decisions to make this offseason, but no decision is bigger than the one surrounding cornerback Darrelle Revis. While the reports have been that the Jets are doing what they can to shop one of the league's best cornerbacks, the team has finally spoken publicly about the situation.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that there’s “no truth” to the rumors that the Jets are attempting to trade Revis.

While this statement leaves nothing open to interpretation, the rumors are extremely prevalent at this point. In fact, the entire situation is rather murky, as explained here.

Really, it’s obvious that Ryan likes Revis and it’s obvious that he’s an asset to the team. He’s been one of the premier cornerbacks in the NFL since entering the league. Unfortunately, the Jets are not a very good football team, and Revis wants to be paid like one of the top corners in the NFL.

In other words, the Jets can't afford to pay Revis the $16 million it would take to retain his services. On top of that, Revis is coming off a season in which he only played in two games before suffering a torn ACL. Some players, like Adrian Peterson, have come back from such an injury, but it's a heavy risk for a team overhauling the roster.

To further fuel Ryan’s talk about the team not actually shopping Revis, general manager John Idzik stated that Revis is a “very valued player on our team,” and according to Mehta, Idzik emphasized getting Revis healthy in time for 2013. Whether or not he’ll actually remain with the Jets is still anyone’s guess.
