John Idzik: Tim Tebow could remain with Jets

New York Jets general manager John Idzik says that Tim Tebow could remain with the team and compete for a starting job in 2013.

First, the New York Jets said that there is "no truth," to rumors about potentially trading cornerback Darrelle Revis, and now they're going against popular opinion again when it comes to quarterback Tim Tebow. According to Seth Walder of the New York Daily News, the Jets believe that Tebow could be a part of the roster going forward.

General manager John Idzik said that Tebow could help increase competition on the team and that the Jets are “going to let the competition play out.” He mentioned that the competitions would be going on throughout training camp.

Most believed that Tebow would be gone by the start of training camp. It’s been widely reported that the Jets are going to try and trade Tebow this offseason and it’s been believed that they would release him in the end if they couldn’t find a team that was willing to give up something, presumably a draft pick, in return.

Tebow was essentially a non-factor in the Jets' quarterback situation last season. Mark Sanchez had one of his worst seasons (among many) to date, but Tebow still only attempted a few passes all season long. Greg McElroy eventually got a start over Sanchez, but when he was injured, the team skipped right over Tebow and went back to Sanchez.

It’s unclear if the Jets are just trying to create some value for Tebow. It’s hard to see any team in the league paying a significant price for Tebow at this point. If a team sends anything, it would likely be a late-round pick and probably not one in the upcoming 2013 NFL Draft.

If Tebow does remain on the team and is competing for the quarterback job, he'll likely have a new face or two to compete with. It's expected that the Jets will bring in some competition in the form of someone like David Garrard or another veteran looking for another starting opportunity.
