Fili Moala, Colts agree to 1-year deal, according to report

The Colts re-signed defensive lineman Fili Moala on Monday as the two sides agreed to a one-year deal.

The Indianapolis Colts secured some depth along the defensive line on Monday when they agreed to a one-year deal with Fili Moala, according to a report from Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star.

Moala, a former second round pick of the Colts, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. He played in eight games last season before tearing his ACL and being placed on injured reserve. Moala started 38 games over the last three seasons, but failed to have the impact some expected him to have coming out of USC.

While, he will have to prove he can still contribute coming off a major knee injury, Moala should at least provide depth along the defensive line. He’s played both defensive end and defensive tackle in his career. Although he hasn’t had a major impact statistically, Brad Wells of Stampede Blue wrote Moala fit better as a 3-4 defensive end than a 4-3 defensive tackle.

The move makes sense for both sides as Moala was able to secure a contract as he continues to work back from injury. He can continue his rehab and will return to a familiar system when he’s healthy. The Colts were able to add defensive line depth and a player they were familiar with, without having to make a considerable financial commitment.
