Darrelle Revis rumors: Jets cornerback says joining 49ers would be ‘awesome’

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis likes the idea of potentially being traded to the San Francisco 49ers due to their contender status.

Ed Mulholland-US PRESSWIRE

The trade talk surrounding New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis continues and this time, it's Revis himself who is sounding off in the media. Revis addressed the rumors that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in his services on The Real Rob Report, a Q&A show hosted by Seattle Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson.

As noted by NFL.com, Revis said that he would be “an addition to help them win that trophy,” when talking of potentially landing in San Francisco. He then followed that up with “Would it be awesome? I mean, yeah.”

Revis went on to say that the 49ers are a contender and they will likely be a contender "for the next couple years." It certainly would seem a strong fit. During the 49ers' loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl, the secondary struggled early on, putting the 49ers in a deficit they were unable to overcome.

Still, what’s actually going to happen with Revis is anybody’s guess. The Jets have suggested that there’s “no truth,” to rumors about the team shopping Revis, but most believe they are, in fact, doing so. Meanwhile, the 49ers appear to have dropped out of the running for Revis, according to some reports.

Everything surrounding Revis revolves around one thing: money. He wants to be paid like one of the top cornerbacks in the league and he probably should, given that he’s arguably the best one. San Francisco doesn’t have a lot of cash on hand, but Revis does sound like he cares about the team being a contender. Perhaps the 49ers get back into trade talks if they find that Revis takes a bit less money to play for a contender.

That’s just one possible dynamic. Revis saying it would be awesome and the 49ers reportedly being out of the running occurred right around the same time, but it’s not as though they’re talking directly to Revis on the trade. No, the 49ers are talking to the Jets, so Revis wouldn’t be totally up to date on the situation.
