Darrelle Revis trade rumors: Falcons potentially interested in Jets CB

After cutting Dunta Robinson last week, the Falcons need another cornerback.

Add the Atlanta Falcons to the list of teams that may acquire New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.

The Pro Bowl cornerback is being shopped around by the Jets and it seems every day a new team interested in acquiring Revis pops into the conversation. On Wednesday, it’s the Falcons, who could use another cornerback in the secondary, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com:

The Falcons got $15.9 million under the cap last week by cutting running back Michael Turner, defensive end John Abraham and cornerback Dunta Robinson. It was assumed at the time that the team clipped Robinson in order to bring back cornerback Brent Grimes.

Revis could be another way to go. The price would be high, as the Jets will seek multiple high draft picks, but general manager Thomas Dimitroff hasn't shied away from making blockbuster deals, as he did to draft wide receiver Julio Jones in 2011.

The Falcons also need to make sure they have the money for Revis long term. Any team that tries to acquire Revis knows that this is the last year of his deal. If said team doesn’t give him a contract extension, then they are giving up a lot compensation (multiple early draft picks?) for just one year of service. Revis is rumored to want a contract that will give him $12 million to $16 million annually.

While he attempts to return from a torn ACL that limited him to just two games last season, Revis will earn $9 million this season.

The Falcons aren’t the only premier NFC team to be in the running for Revis. It’s rumored that the San Francisco 49ers would also like to acquire three-time first team All-Pro.
