Carson Palmer trade rumors: Raiders likely to receive mid-round choice

The Oakland Raiders are expected to receive either a fourth or fifth-round draft pick from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for Carson Palmer.

When Carson Palmer is traded to the Arizona Cardinals, the Oakland Raiders will likely receive a fourth or fifth-round draft pick in return, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King.

Oakland surrendered a 2012 first and 2013 second-round pick for Palmer, and the results have been nothing but disappointing. In two seasons with the Raiders, Palmer threw for 6,771 yards, 35 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, while completing 60.9 percent of his passes. As Oakland’s starting quarterback, Palmer led the Raiders to a paltry 8-16 record -- hardly the return Oakland brass hoped for on a first and second-round investment.

Palmer refuses to restructure his current contract, which mandates that he earns $15 million in 2013. Consequently, the Raiders decided to either trade or cut Palmer -- and it appears that the Cardinals are a willing trade partner. Palmer’s reluctance to restructure his contract was simply a ploy to get the Raiders to release or trade him. King notes that Palmer is expected to sign a new contract with the Cardinals that’s in line with his recent performances.

Once in Arizona, Palmer will become the odds-on favorite to be the Week One starting quarterback. Last season, the Cardinals started Kevin Kolb, John Skelton, Brian Hoyer and Ryan Lindley at quarterback, and boasted one of the league's worst passing offenses.

Oakland is expected to trade for Seahawks quarterback Matt Flynn to replace Palmer, but Silver and Black Pride, SB Nation’s Raiders blog, doesn’t believe it’s a foregone conclusion that Flynn will start for the Raiders in 2013.

Though no longer one of the game's premiere passers, Palmer could see a late-career resurgence in Arizona -- similar to that of Kurt Warner's.
