Ravens safety Christian Thompson suspended four games

Baltimore Ravens safety Christian Thompson has been suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Baltimore Ravens safety Christian Thompson has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, according to a release on the team's official website. It's unclear what exactly Thompson did to violate the policy, but he will be suspended without pay.

He’ll be eligible to return after the fourth regular season game. The suspension will cost him approximately $110,000 of his $480,000 salary for the 2013 season. According to the release, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said that the team has “been aware of this situation for some time.”

Thompson was a fourth-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and was active for seven games this past season. He did not record any statistics and played exclusively on special teams. With the team parting ways with both Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard, the chances of Thompson making an impact and getting a role as a reserve on defense were definitely there, but this suspension likely hurts those chances.

That said, Thompson is eligible to take part in all offseason activities such as training camp, preseason practices and preseason games to solidify his place on the roster despite the regular season suspension.
