NFL Draft 2013: Cardinals reportedly interested to Mike Glennon

The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly interested in N.C. State quarterback Mike Glennon, to potentially groom behind Carson Palmer once a trade is made.

USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports wrote about the Arizona Cardinals closing on a deal for Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer. But near the end of that piece, he also gave us another nugget of information, suggesting that the Cardinals are interested in North Carolina State quarterback Mike Glennon.

Silver says that Glennon could be available in the second round, and could be groomed to be Palmer’s successor. It’s an interesting scenario, given that the Cardinals aren’t expected to give up much more than a late-round pick for Palmer, given that his salary is too much for the Raiders to handle and the fact that he wants out regardless.

On top of that, it looks as though any deal for Palmer will also include a new contract in which he’ll be paid significantly less than what he’s due in 2013, which is about $13 million. Palmer, 33, is nearing the end of his career, but he was productive with the Raiders last season. He threw for 4,018 yards with 22 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.

Glennon is one of the more interesting quarterbacks in what is regarded as a generally weak class for the position. The Kansas City Chiefs traded for Alex Smith, presumably taking them out of the running for the top QB, Geno Smith, which might say a lot about the class. Glennon is one of the top five QBs in the class though, and is considered to have a rather high potential.

Some might say he’s not NFL ready, which would make Arizona a solid destination for him. Palmer is still productive and would surely have a lot to offer a player like Glennon, who may benefit from any potential success Palmer has in the form of free agents interested in coming to an improving team. Seems like a solid move all around.
