Luke McCown will apparently be Drew Brees’ primary backup for the New Orleans Saints, as the veteran quarterback signed with the team Monday, per Adam Schefter:

Luke McCown was cut by the New Orleans Saints at the end of last year’s training camp, but it seems like he’ll be the team’s backup for Drew Brees this season.
Saints announced they agreed to terms with DE Kenyon Coleman and QB Luke McCown on one-year deals.

McCown -- the brother of the Bears' Josh McCown, of no relation to former first-round pick Cade McNown -- was most recently with the Atlanta Falcons, backing up Matt Ryan, although he would not throw any passes. His only significant playing time came in 2007 in Tampa Bay, when he completed 67.6 percent of his 139 passing attempts for over 1,000 yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions. McCown's familiar with the region, having played his college ball at Louisiana Tech before being selected in the fourth round of the 2004 draft by the Browns.

Backup quarterback became a need after Chase Daniel, who had spent his first four seasons with the team, signed a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. McCown was on the Saints in the offseason last year, but was cut after training camp as the team opted to keep just three quarterbacks on the roster.
Coleman could be the more significant signing: the defensive end who had his prime with the New York Jets before being one of the cogs in the trade for Mark Sanchez spent the last two seasons playing under Rob Ryan for the Dallas Cowboys, and the Saints’ new defensive coordinator likely had a role in ensuring Coleman would join the team.
