The Cincinnati Bengals released cornerback Jason Allen on Wednesday, saving more than $3 million in cap space for 2013. Allen will count $500,000 against Cincinnati's 2013 cap because of his signing bonus.

The Bengals signed Allen to a two-year, $8.2 million contract in 2012. However, injuries plagued Allen in his short tenure in Cincinnati, as the former Tennessee Volunteers defensive back played just three defensive snaps in 2012 -- and only appeared in four games.

Allen's base salary of $3 million coupled with his inability to stay on the field last year made Cincinnati's decision a relatively easy one -- especially after the team re-signed Adam Jones and Terence Newman.

Allen will likely have to settle for an incentive-laden, one-year deal -- especially since this year’s free-agent cornerback market has been depressed.

Allen was drafted by the Miami Dolphins 16th in the 2006 NFL Draft, and spent more than five seasons with the Dolphins before the Houston Texans claimed him on waivers.
