Rolando McClain signs 1-year deal with Ravens

The former first-round pick has found a new home after being released by the Raiders.

Rolando McClain has officially signed a one-year deal worth $1.1 million with the Baltimore Ravens after passing a physical, according to an official release from the team. The base salary is worth $700,000, with another $400,000 possible with playing time incentives.

McClain, 23, is looking for a second chance in his professional career. He was selected with the 8th overall pick in 2010 by the Raiders, but struggled to produce in Oakland amidst coaching changes and front office departures.

“It’s a move that can’t go wrong and I’m looking forward to playing in Baltimore as the Ravens run the same or very similar defense as I was a part of at the University of Alabama,” McClain said.

He will get that second chance in Baltimore. The Ravens are one of the best teams in the NFL at developing linebackers, and there is no denying McClain has the natural ability to be a quality player at this level. He is expected to compete with Josh Bynes and Albert McClellan for playing time in training camp.

In 2011, it seemed McClain was on his way to breaking out. He appeared in 15 games, recording 77 tackles and five sacks. A concussion kept him out of a handful of games this past season, as did a two-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

As the Raiders head in a new direction as a franchise under general manager Reggie McKenzie, they felt McClain would be best served suiting up for another team.
