Jeff Demps trade rumors: Patriots exploring moving kick returner?

After taking a flyer on the former track star last August, New England may be ready to move on.

Some guys play football, and some run track. The two don’t always mix.

Jeff Demps is slowing becoming an example of that. The former Florida running back and track star signed a free agent deal with the New England Patriots last August after going un-drafted in the 2012 NFL Draft. He spent the entire season on injured reserve and rumors have surfaced that Demps is hoping to focus more on his track career.

The lack of commitment to football has apparently rubbed the Patriots the wrong way, and understandably so. Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald is reporting that New England is attempting to trade the running back/kick returner/track star less than a year after signing him and before he even stepped on the field for a regular season game.

Demps’ future in track is likely brighter than his football future. He earned a silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics but was never able to string together a ton of success on the football field. Demps obviously has tons of speed, but it takes a bit more than that to succeed in the NFL.

With the rumors of his interest in track, and the fact that he didn’t get drafted a year ago, it’s tough to see a team giving up too much for a player that has never seen regular season action. In fact, if the Patriots manage to swing a deal for Demps, it would be somewhat remarkable. Either way, the chances of Demps being on the Patriots’ roster come kickoff in September seem slim at best.
