NFL news roundup: Trent Edwards released, Darrelle Revis receives strong bill of health

NFL teams are beginning offseason workouts and making their final preparations for the 2013 NFL Draft. Here’s what you may have missed yesterday, including news on Trent Edwards, Darrelle Revis and Justin Smith.

NFL teams are still in the process of making final roster adjustments as they gear up for the 2013 NFL Draft in just over a week, as well as the start of offseason training activities. The best draft prospects are also taking visits around the country, allowing teams to take stock one last time.

Things may have calmed down since the start of free agency on March 12, but there are still plenty of rumors and various wheelings and dealings to satiate news hounds. Here’s what you may have missed yesterday:

Eagles release Trent Edwards

Trent Edwards will not be a part of Chip Kelly's offense next season. His release may have been foretold as far back as February when the Eagles signed Dennis Dixon to the depth chart. Edwards was No. 3 on the depth chart behind Michael Vick and Nick Foles last season, in an Andy Reid offense that was a much better fit for his skillset. Kelly's offense is expected to incorporate spread and read-option elements, and will likely emphasize a base level of mobility that Edwards clearly lacks.

Edwards is an NFL veteran at this point, and should be able to find a backup job elsewhere for camp. Don’t expect him to see the field except in case of emergency, however.

Justin Smith expected back in July

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Justin Smith should be back by Training Camp, according to reports. Smith underwent offseason surgery to repair a partially torn triceps muscle, and is apparently recovering well. He missed the final two games of 2012 regular season with the injury, but was able to return during the 2013 NFL Playoffs. Smith wasn't particularly effective, however, after proving to be one of the Niners' most important defensive pieces through the first 14 games of the season.

Darrelle Revis receives strong bill of health

The New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still dancing around a potential trade that will send Darrelle Revis down south. There are several potential hangups, but the veteran cornerback's health likely won't be one. Revis is reportedly on track or ahead of his rehab schedule for the torn ACL he suffered last season after MRI results came back negative Monday. It appears that he will be 100 percent healthy by the start 2013 season, ensuring that the Bucs (or whoever) will be getting something close to vintage Revis if they do finally pull the trigger on a trade.

Dee Milliner visits Titans, will visit Chiefs

Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner visited the Tennessee Titans on Monday, and will visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, according to reports. Milliner is the consensus best cornerback in the the 2013 NFL Draft class, and isn't expected to fall past the Top 10. He isn't likely to be taken by the Chiefs at No. 1 overall, but if they trade down Milliner could certainly be a possibility. The Titans have a clear need in the secondary, and are in fair position to nab Milliner at No. 10 overall.

Saints sign Seneca Wallace to a 1-year deal

The New Orleans Saints added Seneca Wallace to compete with Luke McCown for the top backup quarterback spot behind Drew Brees. Wallace brings years of backup experience to the table, after spending seven years with the Seattle Seahawks and two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He is a career 59 percent passer, and has thrown a respectable 31 touchdowns to 18 interceptions.

Wallace was one of the top options available among the few free agent quarterbacks still left on the market. Matt Leinart, Tyler Thigpen, Byron Leftwich and the recently released Trent Edwards are among the biggest names still waiting to be picked up.
