In light of multiple bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon that killed three and left more than 100 injured, the NFL commented on the security of the 2014 Super Bowl, scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Feb. 2, 2014.
NFL comments on Super Bowl, Draft security after Boston Marathon bombings
Following multiple bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon, the NFL will review its security procedures for the upcoming Draft.

“We have been operating at a very high level of security since 9/11 for all of our games and events. We have been working closely the last two years with federal, state and municipal agencies on a coordinated and comprehensive security plan for the New York/New Jersey Super Bowl. We do not comment on specifics of these programs but continue to review and evolve our plans to ensure the safety of everyone attending the Super Bowl.”
The 2013 Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers reportedly drew an average of 108.41 million viewers, making it the third most-watched television of all-time, behind two earlier Super Bowls. The official attendance at the game was 71,024, according to the Associated Press.
The visibility and size of the annual event has caused it to be discussed as a potential target of terrorism, but no such incidents have occurred. However, the NFL required an investigation after two Savannah State students were able to sneak into the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans without purchasing tickets.
The NFL also released a statement regarding security at the 2013 NFL Draft, scheduled to begin on April 25. Via Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com:
“For next week’s NFL draft, we will review and enhance our already comprehensive security plans with the NYPD, Radio City and our private security partners. We will advise the public more specifically next week prior to the draft,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement.
On Monday, multiple explosions at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon resulted in chaos. Three were confirmed dead from the blasts.
