The Baltimore Ravens are banking on their strong, successful culture to help out one of their newest additions in middle linebacker Rolando McClain, who was signed as a free agent after being cut by the Oakland Raiders, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Ravens will provide ‘proper guidance’ for Rolando McClain
Baltimore believes it can get the best out of this troubled former first-round pick.
Last year, first-time head coach Dennis Allen suspended McClain for the final two games for conduct detrimental to the team. Newsome says he’s willing to take on the challenge, per the Sun:
“As far as how he’s going to conduct himself here, he’s coming here just to be a part of this football team,” Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said today in his first remarks since signing McClain, a consensus All-American and Butkus Award winner at Alabama. “I think the guys in the locker room will be able to provide him with the proper guidance that he needs as to the way john wants his football team and football players to be.”
The Ravens are taking a chance by bringing in the former first-round pick in McClain, who has had issues galore off the field. Last year, McClain had a misdemeanor assault charged dropped against him in his home state of Alabama after the accuser failed to continue.
However, that wasn’t his only legal issue since joining the NFL. Per the article:
McClain had been facing third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, illegal discharge of a firearm and menacing charges. McClain allegedly threatened to kill the man and fired a gun next to his head during a fight two years ago.
McClain was initially convicted of four misdemeanors, but appealed the verdict and the case is now resolved.
Balitmore only signed McClain to a one year, $770,000 contract, minimizing the burn factor if the signing doesn’t pan out.
In his three years with the Raiders, McClain’s best year came in 2011 when he registered 99 tackles.
