Clay Matthews contract worth a reported $66 million

Clay Matthews signed a five-year extension with the Packers worth $66 million, according to reports.

Green Bay Packers linebacker and pass-rusher Clay Matthews’ new five-year extension is reportedly worth $66 million, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal’s Tom Silverstein.

His extension will pay Matthews an average of $13.2 million per year, which is slightly more than Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware's $13 million per season. He won't be a free agent now until after the 2018 season.

The team’s general manager, Ted Thompson, and head coach Mike McCarthy both expressed their happiness about the fact Matthews will be on their team for the next half decade.

“Clay has been a productive member of our team and we are pleased to be able to come to an agreement that will extend his Packers career,” Thompson said.

McCarthy congratulated Matthews and stated that the linebacker sets an example, both on and off the field, and he is a vital to their continued success.

In four years with the Packers, Matthews, a first-round pick out of USC in 2009, has made 42.5 career sacks, which ranks fifth in franchise history, and his 7.5 postseason sacks rank second in team history. Overall, he has 204 tackles, including his 42.5 sacks, and he has intercepted four passes, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
