The New Orleans Saints have re-signed running back Chris Ivory and are nearing a trade with the Jets, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. The Jets were hesitant to sign Ivory as a restricted free agent, a tag that carries a second-round pick as compensation that would have been transferred from New York to New Orleans.
Chris Ivory re-signs with Saints, could be traded to Jets per report
After visiting New York as a restricted free agent, the three-year veteran could be traded there.
The deal the three-year veteran signed with Saints for 2013 is for $2 million, but Cimini suggest the Jets would try to extend him if the trade goes through. Though nothing is certain at this point, a fifth-round draft choice has been suggested as the price tag for Ivory.
Ivory has had success in limited playing time with Saints, averaging 5.1 yards per carry in his career. The Longview, Texas, native set career highs in 2012 with 137 carries, 716 yards and five touchdowns. The Jets, having lost Shonn Greene to the Titans, would look to platoon Ivory with Bilal Powell and Joe McKnight.
