Pat White ‘very likely’ to sign with Redskins

The Redskins are likely to sign former West Virginia star quarterback Pat White, who is visiting Washington on Wednesday.

Quarterback Pat White is scheduled to visit the Washington Redskins on Wednesday and is likely to sign there according to Jason La Canfora. White was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, but only played one season before being released and has not played in the NFL since.

White was scheduled to meet with the Giants on Tuesday, but cancelled his visit, adding to the belief that he will land in Washington. In his one season in the NFL, White was used in the Dolphins' wildcat scheme, rushing for 81 yards on 21 attempts, but going 0-for-5 as a passer. White signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals in 2010, but quickly retired from baseball.

With the rise in success of mobile quarterbacks, White announced that he would attempt a comeback in the NFL in 2013 and worked out at the West Virginia Pro Day. At West Virginia, White set a then-FBS record for a quarterback with 4,480 rushing yards. White's best chance to succeed may be in an offensive system like the one the Redskins run with Robert Griffin III that employs the read option, which White frequently ran in college.

The Redskins currently only have two quarterbacks on their roster: RG3, who is still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, and Kirk Cousins. Washington has expressed interest in re-signing Rex Grossman, who spent the past three seasons with the Redskins, starting 13 games in 2011. If they bring back Grossman it will be hard to imagine White winning a roster spot.
