Nnamdi Asomugha signs with 49ers, according to report

Asomugha is headed back to the Bay Area, agreeing to a deal with San Francisco.

Free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has reached an agreement with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

The deal is reportedly for one-year with a base salary of $1.35 million. The agreement, which includes no guaranteed money, is worth up to $3 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old Asomugha was reportedly choosing between San Francisco and the New Orleans Saints. Once considered to be the top cornerback in the NFL, Asomugha was released by the Eagles earlier this offseason after two disappointing seasons in Philadelphia.

With San Francisco, Asomugha will join a cornerback group which already includes Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown. Both played well last season, while nickelback Chris Culliver also played a significant role. It's unclear how Asomugha will fit with the 49ers and how big of a role he will play.

The move will, however, take Asomugha back to Northern California where he spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders. Asomugha also played his college career in the Bay Area at Cal. The 10-year veteran has started 130 games in his career and has 15 career interceptions.
